Voluntary carbon registry
Offsets with integrity.
Based in New Zealand, our independent registry balances verifiability and additionality to create a commercially-workable model for voluntary carbon offsetting, measured in Voluntary Carbon Units (VCUs).
Our methodology:
We use Voluntary Carbon Units (VCUs): one VCU is one tree planted and maintained in accordance with this standard.
All projects must satisfy the following six principles to register VCUs:
1. Additionality
Projects must show that the carbon sequestration activity would not have occurred, or would not have occurred at the same scale or rate, without carbon finance.2. Transparency
All relevant project data, including species, planting density, and audit outcomes must be filed in the Registry and be made available in accordance with Registry disclosure rules.
3. Permanence
All projects must ensure a minimum period of 60 years, secured through legally-binding covenants and an undertaking to replant following a major loss event.4. Measurability
Carbon outcomes must be estimated using standardised species-based growth factors published by the Registry and subject to Auditor adjustment according to the site.
5. No double counting
Each VCU represents a unique tree and may only be issued once. VCUs cannot be registered elsewhere, and are retired once applied to any climate-associated mitigation claim.6. Verification
Projects must undergo auditing and comply with disclosure requirements throughout the life of the project.
